Studio Journal

Sketches, colour tests, half-thoughts and the occasional long letter on process. The unedited middle of the work — between the blank page and the finished painting.

Acrylic is for certainty: opaque, fast, forgiving of layers. I use it when I know the image and need it to hold.

Watercolour is for surrender. It moves on its own and rewards a light hand. I reach for it when I want the medium to be a collaborator, not a tool.

Most of my celestial work lives in the tension between the two.

Colour Test

Payne’s grey + gold leaf

A swatch sheet pairing Payne’s grey with raw gold. The grey reads almost violet beside the warm metal — useful for the Portals series.
